A lot of guys are into crossdressing for it so naturally we had to get a picture with this guy... hahah. I have some homework to do but I'll write an entry later!

Bad news, good news
So I'm taking two literature classes this semester, both with the same professor, Francisco (ha)-- one is intro to the analysis of hispanic literature and the other is spanish cinema and literature. I loooove the professor, he's really enthusiastic and funny and actually made reading this stuff fun. So last week, I wrote about how there was a big soccer game and we went out and everyone was celebrating in the streets and getting drunk. So the day after the big soccer win Francisco was "sick" and everyone who has him as a professor figured that just meant he was hungover from going out the night before. Well it turns out he was actually sick and we had subs in his classes last week. THEN! This week, I was supposed to have intro to hispanic lit on monday and I get an email that class is cancelled because he got hit by a car!!!! (????) So NOW, we're going to have subs for the next month- 6 weeks! Bummer! Hopefully our stand-in professor can keep our classes as interesting and as fun as it was before.
Good news!
Happy belated Valentine's day to all! Yesterday, a group of girls went to this greaatt Italian restaurant in the area that has been recommended by professors and Spanish people in the dorm. And it did not disappoint! We all got huge dishes of pastas or pizza, some wine, and I think every one of us had some dessert. I got some great tortellini with pesto and a crepe filled with vanilla ice cream and topped with choc syrup for dessert. Mom & Dad, I'll have to take you when you come visit!
After dinner a few of us went to this bar that my friend Victoria has been wanting to go to forever.. she calls it "the sparkly bar" because it has a bunch of chandeliers hanging in it and is really nice looking. It's actually called "the public lounge" though, and when we walked in it was preettty awkward considering everyone there appeared to be over the age of 40 and smooth jazz was playing. It was weird though because after we ordered our drinks and sat down they changed the music to more contemporary stuff that we hear at the clubs here and turned it up really loud. I guess we got the party started ha!
Also, tomorrow starts CARNAVAL in Bilbao! Now I'm not gonna lie, I don't exactlyyy what Carnaval is (I don't think many people really do either- we learned a little about it in my Basque culture and language class and the origin is unknown) but Deusto's Carnaval was last weekend and from the looks of it, people dress up in costumes and drink in the streets and then go to bars, clubs, whatever. I think it's essentially a Spanish halloween. So tomorrow a bunch of us need to go to the mall, costume shops, etc and get some costumes! Because tomorrow night we're going to an Erasmus party (erasmus is the study abroad program for Europe- they host parties at different clubs here practically every week) and we have to dress up! I think I'm going to be a native american, which I think will be easy enough.
It's crazy how fast the days/weeks are going by! Tomorrow's already thursday-- three classes and then it's the weekend!
HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO MY MAMA in about 2 hours !!!!! I love you and miss you bunches and can't wait to see you and dad when you come visit for spring break!!!!!!
Love you all!

The past 2 weeks and the weeks to come!
Ah, haven't written in so long! So the past two weeks have essentially consisted of going to class and going out and exploring the city. Classes are going well- very different than what I'm used to. My homework for my Basque language and culture class tomorrow is to read literally ONE page in our textbook, so yeah, very interesting haha. Other than that, I'm having a bit of trouble still adjusting to my class times, and I'm having a LOT of trouble not taking naps in between all of my classes hahah but with those three hour breaks and a warm bed to come back to, it's hard not to!
Last Sunday, me Victoria and Belen took the metro into Casco Viejo (the "Old Quarter" of Bilbao) and got some drinks and pintxos! We went to a few different bars and sampled a few different ones but my favorite was definitely a little piece of bread (obviously) with these delicious creamy cheese and pineapple pieces on top. soooo goooooood. And we saw a bar there that has one euro pintxos on Tuesdays.
So on Tuesday we tried to go back but ended up leaving the dorm after the metro stopped running so we took a cab and the bar with the pintxos deal was closed yadda yadda so we just went to a different bar in casco viejo and just hung out. And then left there and made a stop at our favorite local bar here, Drakkar, where they have one euro chupitos (shots) and 3 for 7euro kalimotxos (sorry this whole post is about drinking haha)
ANYWAYS, me belen and victoria have also begun spring break planning but i wasn't really able to partake much because of the fraudulent charges on my credit card (wooo hooooo) but they have a set schedule so i'll need to buy my tickets once I get the new card sent to me. As of now I believe the plan is to go to Paris, Rome, Ibiza and then to Mallorca, but I think I'll miss the Paris portion of the trip because Mama and Dad are going to come visit for my first week of spring break! No worries though, the main destination I want to go to anyway is ROME so I'll still have a great spring break of traveling no matter what. We also want to start doing weekend trips, to Barcelona, Vitoria, and possibly Amsterdam. We'll see!
What else....... oh! Last week "una ola fria" hit Bilbao and we saw SNOW here. Yeah it was kind of miserable, I mean it pretty much rains all the time here anyways so it was basically just COLD and WET(it wasn't actually sticking to the ground cause it hadn't been cold enough before that). I looked up the weather forecast for the coming week and I'm pretty sure it's supposed to rain/snow/precipitate in some way/be freezing all week. YAYYYY.
But! Something to look forward to- we have our day trip on Friday to the South of France!!! We haven't gotten any more information about it yet but I'm sure there will be some to come this week. In my Basque class we've learned that there are 7 Basque provinces, 4 from SPain, and 3 from France. So I imagine we're going to be exploring the Basque part of France (people here are kind of obsessed with being BASQUE and not Spanish and pretty much everyone you meet has some sort of weird basque name)
Also speaking of names, I mentioned before how there are, on average, 3 Emilys in each of my classes- and ironically enough it seems that practically everyone I meet here doesn't understand my name. Our conversations usually go something like-
Spanish person- "Como te llamas?"
Me- Emily
Spanish person- "no nooo.....waaahhttt eeezz yoooor naayymeee"
Me- ........Em-ill-eee.
Pretty funny.
Didn't catch any of the superbowl today, there was a party out at a bar but I decided, since the game wouldnt start till midnight here, to be responsible and go to bed early. As we can all see by the time stamp on this entry, that has failed miserably and it is now 6:30 am and I'm still up (i know you're cringing at this mom and dad!)
This week- classes, maybe attempt number 2 at the one euro pintxos, France on friday-- i think it'll be a good one! I'll post some pics soon from friends' albums and i PROMISE to take my own pictures in France on Friday.
